Back to school... Red Storm ended Labatt's first winning streak at one game, defeating the Blue 5-1 at San Mateo January 12. An early goal surrendered 29 seconds into the game along with three first period penalties set the Blue on the path to the blues. Two of the five goals against came while down a man, and the stench of stale sweat and disappointment hovered thickly above the home team bench.

Bright spots: Craig Denton scored for the second game in a row, dashing opposing goalie Debbie Nishahara's shutout bid with just 1:21 remaining in the game. Craig made sure to give Rob Cassetti a chance to make the initial pass that led to goal, extending Rob's points streak to seven games (Matt Alfano also assisted on the goal).

Frustration defenestration: Getting back into the W column will take more than a return to the crisp line management and defensive commitment evident in Labatt's last game. Keeping a supportive and positive atmosphere on the bench and hustling hard as a team out on the ice are also hugely important.

Not every player needs to score, but every player does need to do their part to protect the goalie and the net. Short, hard shifts and good positional hockey are key to an effective defense.
