Winter 2002-2003 Regular Season
Game closer than score: Red Storm outscored Labatt 7-1 at San Mateo on December 1. Playing with a short bench (6 forwards, 3 defenseman), Labatt's skaters put in a strong effort and displayed improved passing and stick-handling. But in the end, a very good game by the Storm's goaltender, Debbie Nishahara, and scoring (four goals) by #27 (Saunders) were largely responsible for the outcome. On the ice, the game was played much closer than the final score would indicate. Goalie-bowling "sport of the future?": Red Storm's #98 bowled over Labatt goalie Rick Seis after #22 finished off their final scoring play of the game, at 7:36 of the third period. Despite vehement protests by Red Storm concerning the risk of having the game (then 7-1 in their favor) be decided by a "questionable" call, the refs stuck to their guns and insisted that playing ten-pin with the opposing netminder is a 2 minute no-no. Rob's streak extended to 4: Rob Cassetti scored Labatt's lone goal, extending his goal-scoring streak to a team-high 4 games. Let's face it, folks: the man is unstoppable. Cap Raeder, Professional Scout with the San Jose Sharks, was expected to be in attendance at the game to evaluate Rob for a possible free agent signing. Unfortunately, given recent changes in the Sharks' coaching situation, Raeder was unable to make the game.
