There are a few different ways to attack the offensive zone after the puck
has been sent into either corner but I will only outline two types here.
The first involves a two man rule. When the puck is in the corner both the
center and the winger from that side must try to get control of the puck and
either center it to the other winger in the far front of the net, shoot the
puck on the net, or pass it out to the defenseman on their side of the ice.
The opposite winger needs to be stationed in front or to the far post of the
net.
The next type involves what is known as a "Left Wing Lock". This is when
only the center and the right wing go into the offensive zone to get the
puck. At the blueline the right-d takes the right zone, the left-d takes the
center zone, and the left wing, who now covers from the blueline back to the
goal line, takes the left zone. This allows the center and right winger to
go deep into the zone without worrying about defense.
During your scrimmage this coming session, I want you to remember to only
send two forwards in deep, Center and one winger. The other winger needs to
stay at the top of the faceoff circles on the correct side of the ice. This
winger can dive down into the corner if the puck comes to that side. It this
case the other winger needs to move back into position and not get sucked
over to the other side of the ice.
There will be times when you will need to cross to the other side of the ice
as a winger, but be very careful. You could be leaving a skater open to
receive the puck on your side of the ice.
